a chorus of The people

The coming of the plague under King Oedipus's regime further polarized the unequal city-state of Thebes. The elite shielded in their comfortable, well-stocked homes, while the people suffered devastating losses from sickness and scarcity. Cries for bread, freedom, and social justice arose across the city. The Chorus— the people of Thebes— occupied the city square, demanding the overthrow of Oedipus's regime. Our story begins the day after Oedipus tendered his resignation and the people rejoiced through the night. Before the light of dawn, the police clear the square and the city of Argos launches an attack. The show is an experiment in democracy; a group of young performer-composers attempt to transform Sophocles chorus of privileged elder men into a diverse representation of the people. They praise and question the importance of the aristocratic Antigone’s bold civil disobedience within their grassroots movement.

Antigone 20/20 began development as a workshop with the BA Actors and Actor-Musicians at Rose Bruford College, London.
